An interesting thing I learned about the Muskoka area was how hard it was to farm. Most plots of land had bedrock so near to the surface that there was very little topsoil to work with. Many homesteaders gave up farming completely, so it's rather rare to see a barn like this surrounded by a large swath of cleared pasture land. A lot of luck went into receiving land that was decent, and a lot of hardwork went into making it productive. Isn't that most successes in life: A mixture of blessings we can't explain and perseverance through the toil.
